Behind the Book:
The
Idea Behind the Story for I SWEAR TO YOU

What if you realized you were madly in
love with your best friend, only you’d already broken
his heart?
What if you knew with everything
you were that he was the person you were meant to spend
your life with, but he refused to see you?
How far would you go, and what would you say to get him
to listen to you?
That was the basic idea I
had in mind when I started writing my Missed Connections
story I SWEAR TO YOU. I wanted to take two “straight”
best friends, alter their lives completely with one
passionate weekend, and have them come out of that
weekend on opposite ends of the spectrum when it came to
accepting they were gay.
That’s usually how
my stories begin. With a basic premise that I want to
delve deeper into, and from there I explore who the men
are, what they want, why they have not gotten it yet,
and what they are willing to do to get it—and keep it.
In I SWEAR TO YOU the obstacles to Grady and Mateo’s
happiness begin with their own regrets, mistakes, and
fears, and it’s an intense, emotional journey as they
find their way to a future together. I wanted the more
reluctant one to realize he made a huge mistake when he
let the other go. Because for both men, they had fallen
in love with each other long before the sex.
